AFRICAN NARRATIVE
Quoting Breyten Breytenbach from his book “From the middle world:” “artistic creativity is the movement of perceptions, of bringing about new combinations of past and present, of realizing how NEW the OLD can be, of projecting future shapes, and thus helping to shape the future.”
This collection of diverse artist from South Africa and neighbouring countries depict precisely this grounded connection to their ancestral world (the old) but at the same time their art is an agent of destabilization, an agent for change. Good art should make you feel challenged and unsettled and not fit neatly in your comfort zone. These rural and urban artists captures the essence of everyday living and convey emotion and depth. Emotion spanning from despair to hope, and the soul of their environment: the beggars, the bicycles, the traders and cultural customs. While their work serve as a narrative of the hardships endured by them and those around them , these artists also depict the music, sport and social life. Music is especially a recurring theme amongst these artists.
These artists make us re-examine our place in society and how the OLD can be used to shape the NEW for the future.
